Google Quantum AI has announced a historic breakthrough with its new “Quantum Echoes” algorithm running on the Willow quantum processor, marking the first verifiable quantum advantage ever achieved. Published in Nature, the study reveals that the algorithm computed the molecular structure of a simple compound 13,000 times faster than the most powerful classical supercomputer—an unprecedented feat that can be independently verified on other quantum machines or through experimental data.
The Willow chip, equipped with 105 superconducting qubits, utilized a process inspired by a “quantum butterfly effect,” enabling it to scramble and unscramble quantum information with remarkable precision. This approach allows for advanced temporal pattern recognition that efficiently extracts molecular insights beyond classical reach.
While the demonstration focused on a relatively simple molecule, Google researchers say it paves the way for quantum-driven molecular simulations with real-world applications in drug discovery, materials science, and chemistry.
The achievement signifies a major step toward practical quantum computing, validating the promise of quantum advantage once considered theoretical.
