Apple rolls out new age-verification tools for apps worldwide

Apple has announced the global rollout of new age-verification tools across its platforms, aimed at helping developers comply with evolving child safety regulations in multiple countries and regions. The update introduces enhanced developer tools designed to ensure that apps meet legal requirements related to age restrictions, parental consent, and user verification.

At the center of the update is an improved Declared Age Range API, currently available in beta. This tool allows apps to identify a user’s age category and receive signals indicating how the age verification was performed. The move is part of Apple’s broader effort to provide developers with the infrastructure needed to address stricter digital safety laws emerging worldwide.

Regional Rules Driving the Changes

The rollout is aligned with upcoming regulatory requirements in several markets, including Australia, Brazil, Singapore, and parts of the United States. Starting February 24, 2026, users in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore will be unable to download apps rated 18+ unless their age has been verified as adult.

In Brazil, developers who disclose the presence of loot boxes during the age-rating process will see their applications automatically classified as 18+ in the local App Store. Meanwhile, new compliance requirements in the U.S. will take effect later in the year. In the state of Utah, the rules begin on May 6, 2026, followed by Louisiana on July 1, 2026. Developers operating in these regions will be required to use Apple’s tools to verify age categories and obtain parental approval when major app updates affect younger users.

Expanded Tools for Developers

To help developers meet these obligations, Apple has expanded its developer toolkit. Alongside the Declared Age Range API, the company introduced additional capabilities such as the Significant Change API under PermissionKit, a new age-rating property in StoreKit, and App Store Server Notifications to help track compliance with regulatory requirements.

These tools also allow developers to notify adult users about major updates through a “significant update” action, provided they follow Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines and clearly explain the changes.

With governments around the world strengthening digital safety policies, Apple’s new tools are intended to help developers build compliant applications while maintaining a safer online environment for younger users.
