Indian traders protest against foreign e-tailers, burn effigies of Bezos
By MYBRANDBOOK
Indian retailers burned effigies of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as part of their campaign ‘Bharat Chhodo Morcha’ to boycott foreign-owned e-commerce brands. As part of the protests, organizations such as Indian Sellers Collective, Swadeshi Jagaran Manch, and All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation exhorted the government and consumers to shun multinational brands and support local retailers.
ISC accused foreign e-tailers of copying the designs of their bestselling products and launching them at competitive prices. Moreover, the trade association said, they run a systematic campaign to manipulate search results to divert sales of the bestselling products on its platform to its own product lines. As a result, no seller grows by doing business with the MNC e-commerce platforms.
The campaign also involved a national conclave and on-ground protests in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana to urge the government and consumers to shun MNC e-commerce brands and embrace swadeshi sellers' products to bring relief to small traders this festive season.
For the past few years, foreign e-commerce retailers have taken over the sheen of Dhanteras for small retailers. Indian Sellers Collective has undertaken a nationwide campaign to get consumers and the government to reject products of foreign e-commerce companies and embrace products of Indian firms.
