Microsoft acquires RiskIQ to strengthen the cyber security portfolio

Microsoft is officially acquiring RiskIQ, a security software vendor. RiskIQ provides management tools and threat intelligence gathering against a wide range of cyberattacks across Microsoft’s own cloud services, AWS, on-premises servers, and supply chain attacks.


Microsoft said the acquisition will help its customers address the risks created by remote work. While Microsoft did not disclose the financial terms, Bloomberg had earlier reported that it paid more than USD500 million in cash for the purchase.


RiskIQ has built a strong customer base and community of security professionals who we will continue to support, nurture, and grow. The cloud-based RiskIQ software detects security issues across networks and devices, and the company lists Box, the US Postal Service, BMW, Facebook, and American Express as customers.


In the past couple months, there has been substantial amount of cyber attacks have been noticed, which of very high profile, to address this ever growing segment, Microsoft had taken the step to invest into this emerging field.


In a company blog post, Eric Doerr, Vice President, Cloud Security at Microsoft, wrote: “Microsoft is announcing that we have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire RiskIQ, a leader in global threat intelligence and attack surface management, to help our shared customers build a more comprehensive view of the global threats to their businesses, better understand vulnerable internet-facing assets, and build world-class threat intelligence.


With more than a decade of experience of RiskIQ in scanning and analysing the internet, RiskIQ can help enterprises identify and remediate vulnerable assets before an attacker can capitalise on them.
