Delhi’s MAX hospital tries plasma therapy on coronavirus patients

Max Healthcare is the first hospital in India to use convalescent plasma therapy, which uses antibodies from the blood of cured patients, to treat two Covid-19 patients who were in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Max Healthcare, Saket, has used the plasma therapy on two family members, who have been critically ill. The hospital is still awaiting approval from ICMR to use the therapy which has shown positive results outside the country.

“For plasma treatment, an approval needs to be given as a clinical trial. At present, both ICMR and DCGI have worked out protocols and advertised for hospitals to submit proposals for conducting trials. Even as we were awaiting approval, the family of the two critically ill patients requested that we use this therapy,” informed Dr Sandeep Buddhiraja, Group Medical Director, Max Healthcare.

There is a provision for “Off Label Use” in case of critically ill patients for an already approved drug to be used for a new purpose. In such cases, the hospital needs to seek approval from its ethics committee and a written undertaking from the patient’s family allowing the healthcare facility to use the drug or therapy. Also, a plasma donor is needed in this case.

“The plasma donor has to be a person who has recovered from Covid-19 at least 2-3 weeks back. We treat a person as cured after two negative reports. Two weeks after the second report – which means 28 days after the infection was detected – a person can donate his plasma,” Dr Buddhiraja said.
